Apple News+ announcement

Apple launched a new subscription service today, providing access to over 300 magazines from the Apple News app. Starting a premium subscription to Apple News+ happens from directly within Apple News, alongside free content. Like other Apple services, News+ delivers expert curated content that is personalized, private and secure.

Advertiser tracking in News+ is not allowed, and Apple does not know what subscribers in the Apple News app are reading. Family Sharing is included, meaning that family members can all read magazine and newspaper content with a single subscription.

The service initially launches in the US and Canada, with the UK and Australia coming in fall 2019. Canadian subscribers can access content in both English and French.

At launch, News+ offers more than 300 magazines and two newspapers: The Wall Street Journal and Los Angeles Times. The magazines available cover many different topics, including news and politics, fashion, entertainment, science and more.

How much does Apple News+ cost?

Apple News+ delivers the first month free, with subscriptions costing $9.99 per month including Family Sharing. Apple claims that annual subscriptions to every title available in News+ would cost over $8,000 per year.

Apple announces first games for Apple Arcade

Apple on Monday announced three new subscription services, Apple Arcade, Apple News+ and Apple TV+. Apple Arcade will allow iOS users to access over 100 premium games for a monthly subscription fee. The service will also routinely add new games which can be played across all devices including the iPhone, iPad and Apple TV. Games will not include any ads or in-app purchases.

While Apple may be a little late to the movie streaming service, the App Store is visited by half a billion people each week. Games is also the most popular category on the App Store with free to play games being the most popular. Apple explained that paid games don't do as well because they are not as easy to find, but hopes to change that with Apple Arcade.

Apple never became the "console killer" many had predicted that it would, and the Apple TV gaming section never took off like its iOS counterpart. It will remain to be seen if mobile users enjoy games enough to pay for access to so many titles, or if they will just continue to download free to play games with IAPs.

On Wednesday Apple released a full list of available Apple Arcade titles. Pricing for the service is unknown at this time. Apple Arcade will be available for all iOS devices and Apple TV in the fall.

Confirmed Apple Arcade Titles:

  • ATONE: Heart of the Elder Tree
  • Beyond a Steel Sky
  • Box Project
  • Cardpocalypse
  • Doomsday Vault

How to update iPhone apps in one quick step

App Store update purchased

For iPhone, Pad, and iPod touch owners with many apps installed, it seems there's a never ending stream of updates pushed by developers. Most of these updates come in the form of minor bug fixes and improvements, with a constant nagging red notification bubble on the App Store icon. Just opening the App Store to see what's available under the Updates tab takes up valuable time.

Some iPhone users scroll through the available updates, to prevent installing any apps that have completely redesigned their interfaces. But most of the time, even this is temporary, as all apps will eventually have to be updated to keep pace with features of iOS.

For those who are not concerned with the content of updates, there's an easy way to update apps right from the home screen. Only one catch, the iOS device you're using must support 3D Touch.

To update iPhone apps quickly using 3D Touch shortcuts, follow these steps:

  1. Unlock and navigate to the iOS Home Screen
  2. Deep press on the App Store icon
  3. Tap Update All
  4. App Store update 3D Touch shortcut
  5. All available app updates will be downloaded and installed

To avoid manually installing App Store updates, turn on automatic updates under Settings. With automatic updates ON, the iPhone will install app updates as soon as they become available.

iOS App of the Week: DC Universe

DC Universe

The streaming market is about to get very crowded with heavy hitters like Apple and Disney preparing to throw their hat in the ring. Consumers already have a ton of choices with Netflix, Hulu, Amazon and specialty services like HBO GO, WWE Network and CBS All Access. Users are going to have to decide what movies and television shows are worth watching and subscribe accordingly, and Warner Bros.' DC Universe should be a serious contender for fans of the superhero genre.

Marvel may be the king of the live action superhero movie, but DC is killing it with their animated features and original series on its new streaming service. DC Universe is a subscription service that gives users access to new DC series such as Titans, older DC properties, digital comic downloads and news. Unlike Marvel whose IP is owned by different studios, DC has the rights to all their series and movies allowing them to build a fun back catalog of serials, television shows and movies. Warner Bros. has even gone back and remastered old shows like the 1974 Shazam and Batman: The Animated Series.

While it is great to have a access to all of DC's older television shows and movies, what makes DC Universe worth its subscription fee is its original content. Warner Bros. has really hit it out of the park with the return of its popular animated series Young Justice and its live action series Doom Patrol. Its flagship series Titans felt a bit rushed and incomplete, but it was still serviceable.

DC has two more original series in the works, Swamp Thing and Harley Quinn, and hopefully plans to add more movies and television shows in the future. Warner Bros. should really consider including its live action films like Aquaman and Wonder Woman, if they plan to compete with Disney, who have the entire Marvel movie universe at their disposal.

The DC Universe app allows you to access your subscription wherever you go. You can watch movies and shows directly on your device, or stream it to any Chromecast-equipped television set. The app also allows you to download select digital comics and read them on your iPhone or iPad.

The DC Universeapp is free to download. A subscription is $7.99 a month or $74.99 a year. You can give the service a spin for free with a 7-day free trial.

Apple AirPower charging mat officially cancelled

AirPower

Apple's highly anticipated AirPower wireless charging mat has been cancelled by the intractable laws of physics. AirPower was revealed in fall 2017 as a versatile charging mat based on an expansion of the Qi standard, which would allow multiple devices to charge simultaneously. Not only would AirPods, iPhones and Apple Watch devices charge anywhere on the mat, but charge status would be communicated in real time.

Unfortunately, the project was rumored to be hitting engineering roadblocks, and the AirPower launch was postponed indefinitely. Despite packaging on the most recent AirPods showing an AirPower silhouette, it seems Apple's team was unable to solve overheating issues in the charging mat's coils.

Dan Riccio, Apple's senior vice president of Hardware Engineering, sent an official statement to TechCrunch killing the AirPower project for now:

"After much effort, we’ve concluded AirPower will not achieve our high standards and we have cancelled the project. We apologize to those customers who were looking forward to this launch. We continue to believe that the future is wireless and are committed to push the wireless experience forward."

Apple still owns a trademark for the AirPower name, so it's possible the product will be revisited in the future. But for now, those looking forward to the highly ambitions AirPower charging mat will have to look elsewhere for a wireless charging solution.

Dungeon Warfare 2 now available on the App Store

Dungeon Warfare 2

The sequel to the popular tower defense gameDungeon Warfare is now available on the Apple App Store. Dungeon Warfare is known as the opposite of EA's disastrous Dungeon Keeper remake, earning a solid 4.9 star rating on the App Store. Dungeon Keeper was maligned by fans for being filled with over-the-top timers and microtransactions, unlike Dungeon Warfare and Dungeon Warfare 2, which are premium titles with no IAPs.

After a successful launch on Steam in 2018, the long awaited Dungeon Warfare 2 has finally made it way to mobile devices. The Dungeon Warfare games are strategy titles where you use a variety of traps to defend your dungeon from greedy adventurers. Each time you succeed in defending your dungeon you gain access to more powerful traps and utilities.

In Dungeon Warfare 2 you can squash, impale and run over your enemies with boulders, spikes, minecarts and more. The pixel graphics aren't the best, but the sequel offers a ton of upgradable traps for you to deploy, enemies with different traits, boss battles, and more than 60 levels with an infinite number of procedurally generated dungeons.

You can also mix your own difficulty by combining different mode runes. Other features include an endless mode and three skill trees with 11 skills.

Both Dungeon Warfare and Dungeon Warfare 2 have earned high praise from players on Steam and from critics like Worth A Buy.

Both games are available on the Apple App Store for only $4.99.

How to keep track of your mindful minutes with your Health app on iPhone and iPad.

Mindfulness is the very simple concept of focusing one's attention on the present moment, which can be achieved through a number of meditative techniques. Derived from Buddhist practices, it is far from a fringe belief - in fact, it is now widely used in many clinical settings to alleviate symptoms associated with depression, anxiety and stress, and is employed in some behavioral and cognitive therapies.

The recent popularity of this practice has led to a number of apps that help you achieve and track your periods of mindfulness, including Calm, Insight Timer, and 10% Happier, to name a few. Apple's Health app lets you track your mindful time, which you can do manually or by connecting it to whatever mindfulness app you use. Here's how to do it on iPhone and iPad:

  1. Open up the Health app, tap on the Health Data tab at the bottom, then tap on Mindfulness.
  2. How to keep track of your mindful minutes with your Health app on iPhone and iPad.
  3. Tap on Mindful Minutes.

How to view Air Quality Index (AQI) on Apple Maps on iPhone and iPad.

One of several new features in iOS 12.2 is the addition of the Air Quality Index to the Maps app. The AQI is a measurement of air quality that takes into account ground level ozone, particulates (which includes things like ash and pollen), carbon monoxide, sulfur dioxide and nitrogen dioxide. The effects of these pollutants on one's health, depending on the amount, can range from mild irritation for those who are more sensitive (those with asthma, active people like joggers) to downright hazardous for anyone to be breathing.

The scale ranges from 0 to 500 and is broken down into 6 color coded categories.

HomePod now as low as $279.99

HomePod

Best Buy is offering Apple's HomePod for $279.99 or $46.67/mo.. That's $20 less for the smart-speaker than the new listed price on apple.com. Apple on Wed. reduced the price of the HomePod from $349 to $299.

Apple typically saves price reductions for product refreshes, but this is not the first time the company has lowered the price of less popular hardware mid-cycle. The Cupertino company dropped the third-generation Apple TV from $99 to $69 before unveiling its successor six-months later. It is unknown if Apple is planning to announce a second-generation HomePod, but it is unlikely we will see a refresh any time soon. The original HomePod was announced in 2017, but Apple did not begin selling the speaker until 2018.

The HomePod is highly priced compared to the Amazon Dot, Amazon Echo and Google Home. The Dot retails as low as $39.99 and the Google Home is only $129. That's a big difference from the HomePod's original price of $349.

The new price of $299 brings the HomePod a little closer to the Echo and Google Home, but it still may be a bit high for some. Apple does not dominate the speaker market like its does with the smartphone market, and a $170 difference could still turn off non-Apple fans. Early reviews for the HomePod were not glowing, although Apple has addressed a lot of criticism with later software updates.

$279 through bestbuy.com is currently the lowest price that the HomePod can be found. It is available in both black and white and comes with 3 months of free Apple Music for new subscribers.

iOS App of the Week: Rolando: Royal Edition

Rolando: Royal Edition

Anyone who knows their iOS history will remember Rolando, one of the first full puzzle-adventure games on the Apple App Store. The original Rolando was released for iOS on December 18, 2008, a few months after the App Store opened for business. The game won all types of awards, like the Best iPhone Game of 2008 by the Boston Herald, according to Wikipedia.

Now the iPhone classic is back as a remastered "Royal Edition." It is time again to save Rolandoland from an invasion of the Shadow Creatures. All your favorite Rolandos are back in four puzzle platforming worlds with a soundtrack provided by DJ Mr Scruff. Each Rolando comes with their own unique personalities and attributes which you'll need to use to escort the endlessly napping King and Queen past the Shadow Creatures.

The remastered version takes full advantage of all the available iPhone controls forcing you to tap, swipe and tilt you way through traps, trampolines, catapults and more. The level designs are also all unique requiring you to use your Rolandos and their attributes in different ways. You'll need to use your full gyro controls to lead your Rolandos through mazes on the bonus levels, or use your environment to stop the Prince, who can't be control directly and perpetually rolls around.

While the trailer and official App Store description are littered with reviews for the original version of the game, the remastered version has also been earning its own high marks from critics and players. The Royal Edition currently has an impressive 5-star rating from 129 user reviews. It was also given 5-stars by Touch Arcade.

Rolando: Royal Edition is available on the App Store for $2.99. Fans of the original will love the new polished version, while new players will enjoy discovering Rolandoland for the first time.

How to set up an Out of Office reply for your iCloud email

The out-of-office reply is a handy feature that lets you respond to emails automatically with a message saying that you are out of the office, or anything else you want it to say. Just about every email provider offers this feature, though Apple's Mail app does not have the option - you have to set it up on your Mac with Mail rules, and they are client-side, which means your Mac has to be on the whole time you are away in order to respond with your message. You will want to set up these responses through the email service provider itself rather than a manager like Mail - so you would set it up in iCloud or Gmail or Yahoo, etc.

iCloud email has a dedicated feature called "Vacation" that lets you create your out-of-office Message. You will want to do this from a desktop browser because if you are on mobile it will ask if you want to set up iCloud on your device, so you have to request the desktop site, which is annoying to use because it isn't optimized for mobile. So here's how to do it from your Mac or PC:

  1. Open a browser and head to iCloud.com and log in, then click on Mail.
  2. How to set up an Out of Office reply for your iCloud email
  3. Click on the gear icon on the left side bottom and choose Preferences.
  4. How to set up an Out of Office reply for your iCloud email
  5. Click the Vacation tab. Check the box next to "Automatically reply to messages when they are received." Now you can enter your message and set beginning and end dates. Click "Done" when you are ready.
  6. How to set up an Out of Office reply for your iCloud email

People who send you emails during this period will receive your message once in a 24 hour period (so they won't get the message every time you are cc'd on a work email, for example). If you want to stop your auto reply early, just go back in and deselect the "Automatically reply to messages when they are received" option.

iOS Mail preview settings

The stock iOS Mail app does a fine job of bringing multiple email accounts into one place. Apple naturally integrates the Mail app across iOS for a variety of purposes, including smart Siri suggestions and Notification Center widgets. Just browsing your inbox is usually the easiest way to see which messages are a priority.

By default, Mail only shows two lines of each message. In addition to the subject line and the sender, this can provide extra context about whether the message is important. For more information, iOS Mail can be configured to show more words from each email.

To add more lines to Mail previews on the iPhone, iPad or iPod touch, follow these steps:

  1. The default mail previews are two lines per message

Facebook Messenger

Way back in 2014 Facebook began forcing people to download their Messenger app by blocking messages on the official Facebook app. Originally users were able to avoid downloading Messenger by sending messages through facebook.com, but the social media giant has also figured out a way to blocked messaging on their mobile website. Most iPhone users are now forced to use Messenger to communicate with family and friends who refuse to give up using the social media platform.

There has been many calls for consumers to delete Facebook for a variety of reasons, but it's hard to live in modern society without at least one of the big three social networks on your device. Luckily there is a way to eliminate at least one of Facebook's products on your iPhone/iPad to help you begin cutting back on your social media fat. Here's how to send messages on Facebook without using the Messenger app.

  1. Navigate to facebook.com on your mobile browser.
  2. Tap the bell icon to open your Notifications.
  3. On Safari tap the square w/ arrow icon, on Chrome tap the 3 dots and select "Request Desktop Site."
  4. Tap the messages icon to send a message to anyone on your friends list.

App Store drought continues as we wait for Apple Arcade

Apple Arcade

It has been a weird year for games on the App Store. There seems to be a shortage of quality titles each week, making selecting an App of the Week a difficult task. Perhaps developers are waiting for Apple's new subscription service Apple Arcade. If that is the case, it is going to be a long year for mobile gamers until the service is available in the fall.

Apple may be gambling on the App Store by offering the subscription service. For years they have allowed developers to condition their users to think they deserve everything for free. The race to the bottom mentality of freemium games and micro transactions have plagued the App Store from day one. After years of of not having to pay for games Apple now expects its users to pay a monthly fee.

Developers quickly discovered that it is a difficult task to convince users to pay a premium price for a game when so many other games are available for nothing. This has forced many to adopt the free-to-play model using in-app purchases to make their money. It is hard to release a quality title for $2.99 while freemium titles like Candy Crush are raking in millions. The big question is will developers switch their mentality and abandoned microtransactions for Apple's subscription service?

Another big question is will titles like Oceanhorn 2: Knights of the Lost Realm be an Apple Arcade exclusive? If the answer is yes, then the App Store may be in trouble. If all the quality titles are going to go behind Apple's paywall then the App Store will most likely be a graveyard of only free-to-play games.

It's hard to bet against Apple, but asking people to subscribe to yet another subscription service is asking a lot in 2019. There are so many other options such as Nintendo Switch Online, Steam and PlayStation Now. Apple is also competing against Netflix, Disney Plus and other subscription services including their own such as Apple Music and Apple TV+. If people aren't already willing to pay for mobile games why would they now be willing to pay a monthly fee, especially if free games are still availble on the App Store.

Hopefully Apple won't cannibalize their own App Store for those who are still willing to pay for the occasional premium title. I guess we will find out this fall.
